Pediatric dentistry

A dentist for the kids and the grown-ups, under one roof

Superior Smiles is an Adult & Pediatric Dentistry office in Bakersfield, so the whole family can book in the same place.

Chapter 01

Why the first visits matter more than the first filling

The common guidance is to bring a child in by their first birthday, or when the first tooth appears. That visit is rarely about treatment. It's about a child meeting the building, the chair and the people, while nothing is hurting.

A child who has already sat in the chair, had a quick look and left without anything happening usually treats the next visit as ordinary. The ones who first see a dentist because of a toothache tend to remember that instead.

Dr. Kaur is the dentist at Superior Smiles. One patient wrote that she was very gentle and explained everything that needed doing, and that's the approach we'd want for a small child too: say what's about to happen, then do it slowly.

One office for the whole family

The vinyl on our door at Suite 660 reads Adult & Pediatric Dentistry, and it means what it says. Parents and children can be booked in the same office, so there's one address on Buena Vista Rd and one phone number, (661) 454-7600, for everybody.

If you're nervous yourself, that helps. Children pick up on a parent's fear of the dentist quickly, and being able to sit in the same waiting room under the chandelier, and visit the same team, takes some of the pressure off both of you.

Most insurances are accepted. When you call, tell the front desk how many people you're booking and their ages, and they can line up the visits, whether that's back to back or on separate days. We're open Mon-Thu 8:00 AM-5:00 PM and Fri 8:00 AM-3:00 PM.

Chapter 03

Making it easy at home between visits

Brushing twice a day matters most, with fluoride toothpaste in the amount your dentist recommends for your child's age. For the youngest children that's usually a very small smear, and a grown-up should do the brushing or at least finish it.

Sugary drinks do more harm than a sweet at mealtime, because sipping keeps the teeth bathed in sugar all day. Water between meals is usually the easiest change to make.

None of this needs to be perfect. If your child resists the brush, or you're not sure what's normal for their age, bring it up at the visit. The hygiene team can show you what to try, and there's no lecture attached.

Our door at Suite 660 reads Adult & Pediatric Dentistry, and Google reviewers rate the office 4.7 from 331 reviews.
